On the Bright Side

Owning a house is a good thing and a bad thing. It's nice to have a place to call your own and to paint it and see it come to your vision. But the money you spend at the beginning is crazy. It seems like every weekend we are going places and buying things that we need, and I mean really need. Not things that can wait or frivolous things, essentials like appliances, towels, dishes etc. Even trying to make the garden look nice is expensive.

I am trying to look at the bright side of things. In a few months the major purchases will be done and I can concentrate on other things like the vegetable garden am going to plant.

The thing is money is not that important to me. Health and happiness is what I want out of life.

I have never been happier and I love where I live. I love the person I am sharing my life with and three animals that make up our family.

I will try not to think about money. In the big scheme of things it is not important and not the thing that is making me happy.

Can't we all just get along?

I have pets, three of them. Two cats and a dog. Sometimes its great and other times is very trying. Take the cats for example Minnie and Earle. Minnie is a little spitfire who stands up for herself and is very affectionate. Earle is a wimp and is very standoffish unless there are treats involved.

Freshie, our one year old Beagle, is very sweet but needs a little more training. He likes to chase the cats. Minnie hisses at him and Freshie is now afraid of Minnie. Freshie chases Earle and barks at him. It can be a little loud and tense at time. But they need to learn to get along.

It makes me think about people and why they can't seem to get along. It takes work and patience. People don't seem to want to try and work things out. They want to hold grudges and be petty.

I think people can learn a lot from my pets. They don't hold grudges and they are trying to get along. Really, they just want to be able to live together peacefully. Maybe that is something we all should be striving for.

Designer Diaper Bags

I overheard a conversation today between two girls who looked to be about 15. I was on the bus and they were behind me. They were chatting about school and how next year they would be able to drive. It was a pretty innocent conversion until one girl said to the other "I am trying to get pregnant so next year I might not be in school". I thought WHAT?!

How can you even think that a 15? Where do you even get that idea? Why are kids these days growing up so fast? When I was 15 that was the farthest thing from my mind. I look back and I think I was naive.

I am not one to point to popular culture for the problems of today's youth. But when Jamie-Lynn Spears and Bristol Palin have babies in their teens and we see them in magazines with designer clothes and designer diaper bags I cant help but wonder what is going on.

What's so wrong with staying innocent as long as you can? What is driving these girls to motherhood so quickly?

You sir are no Tim Gunn

I was a little appalled the other day while watching Project Runway Canada. While talking to a designer Brian Bailey said "make it work." Hold on a sec, did Brain Bailey say make it work? I thought I might have heard that wrong. I went back and listened again. Yes, he did in fact say it.

Well Brian Bailey who do you think you are? That is one of the catchphrases of the silver fox, Tim Gunn. He says it all the time. He owns make it work.

Heidi has "Auf Wiedersehen" and Iman has "you just don't measure up".

So Brian Bailey back off and find you own catchphrase.

Easter Mass

Today I went to church. As I child I went to church every Sunday and once Lent began and the statues were all covered in purple cloths I always found it very depressing. Then on Easter morning when you went to mass everything was uncovered and cheerful. This morning was the same thing for me, the Easter service is very joyful and the hymns are peppy and happy.

I am not an overly religious person but I do like going to mass from time to time. It's a nice place to sit and think or just to listen to the music. I also listen to what's being said and although I don't believe in all the teachings of the church, I try to come away with something positive.

The mass today was for my friend's father who died in October. I know that it meant lot to her that I was there. It was worth going for that reason alone.

Work it, Girl!

Have you ever felt that sometimes your actions disappoint people? I feel that way a lot. I hate the thought of disappointing someone for any reason. That has been a real struggle for me, to be myself and not try to feel like I let people down for making my own decisions. I don't know how people have the self esteem to do that.

Self esteem: a realistic respect for or favorable impression of oneself; self-respect.

Just looking at that definition makes an anxious.

From now on I will channel the self esteem and self-respect of RuPaul. RuPaul you say? Well he is all about confidence and working it. So from now on when I feel that pesky low self-esteem I will imagine RuPaul calling out to me "Work it, Girl!"

And work it I shall.

Moving

I hate moving. I hate packing boxes. In the past two years I have moved twice and now going into my third. Brian has told me that his Aunt has moved all over the the same neighbourhood every couple of years. Once she moved to the house next door. It would drive her husband nuts.

Don't get me wrong our new house is great. My friends live around the corner, we are close to Quidi Vidi Lake so we can go for walks. I just hate packing!

Earle as been no help as he gets into everything. He loves the newspapers I am using and he keeps sticking his paws in the box to pull it out. I also found him in a box under some clothes.

Rant over and back to packing.

I just hope I don't pack Earle in a box by mistake.
